Imagine getting stopped at the door of your child’s school. An “If you are dropping off your son’s forgotten lunch, books, homework, equipment, etc., please TURN AROUND and exit the building. Your son will learn to problem-solve in your absence.” sign up at Catholic High School for Boys in Arkansas is trending on social media. The photo of the sign was posted on August 10th and has over 115,000 shares.
The school’s principal, Principal Steve Straessle, says that the sign is not a joke. “This is nothing new for us,” he stated. “It was the beginning of the school year and we wanted to underscore the policy to our new parents.” He also wanted to make mention of the parent’s reactions. “It’s not to be mean or cruel, but to teach the important lesson of problem-solving,” he said. “We have received zero complaints.”
On the school’s Facebook post of the sign, many commenting on the post have been in favor of the sign saying that today’s youths lack responsibility.
One person commented, “These are HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ! If they haven’t learned how to problem solve without mommy or daddy by now it’s time and if it isn’t taught at home maybe that’s why the school has HAD to step in.” Another commented, “Until parents stop being helicopters and start being REAL, generations of children will have their parents as their lap dogs.”
Of course there have been negative comments stemming from the post, but the rule will stand either way. Straessle said, “It’s simply to help boys avoid the default switch of calling mom and dad when things don’t go right to bail them out.”
