Kevin Johnson Hit with Pie: Man Charged with Assault, Battery

The man who hit Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson in the face with a pie has been formally charged with assault and battery.

Sean Thompson, a 32-year-old local activist, was charged Friday with one count of felony assault against a public official and one count of misdemeanor battery.

Johnson, a former NBA star who was elected mayor in 2008, was greeting people at an outdoor charity dinner Wednesday when a man approached him from behind and shoved a pie in his face. The mayor struck back and tackled Thompson.

Thompson said he was angry that Johnson devoted so much political energy to an NBA arena and not to other needs, such as education and homelessness.

Thompson was ordered to have no contact with Johnson for three years. He remained in jail Friday. His $100,000 bail will be reviewed Tuesday (Sept 27). [ESPN]
