After angry users called it “racist”, Snap removed a filter on Wednesday (Aug 10).
The filter in question, which users said resembled “yellowface” and mirrored stereotypes of Asian faces, featured a filter with closed, slanted eyes. Snapchat told The Verge that the filter was inspired by anime and meant to be playful. Many think that “playful” could be express in a more appropriate manner. It is said to be taken out of circulation to never return.

This isn’t their first time receive backlash. In April, a Bob Marley filter to celebrate 4/20 and weed culture was viewed as disrespectful. The Bob Marley Estate sanctioned the tasteless filter.
